Dr. Berri was first exposed to patients with peritoneal mesothelioma and HIPEC in 2008, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. It was through that training that he developed a strong interest in HIPEC.
“I began to operate on and take care of patients with mesothelioma and developed a strong interest in the treatment needed and how best to ensure patients with peritoneal mesothelioma would receive the best care with the highest quality outcome,” Dr. Berri said.
Dr. Richard Berri came to the Van Elslander Cancer Center in 2011, where he established the first HIPEC and cytoreductive surgery program in the state of Michigan. He received specific training performing HIPEC procedures through his fellowship at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Since the Van Elslander Cancer Center HIPEC program’s inception, Dr. Berri has treated patients who have come to see him not just locally, but from across the nation and world. Now the program is one of the highest volume nationally recognized HIPEC programs in the country.
Dr. Berri advocates a collaborative and comprehensive approach for finding the best treatment plan for his patients. He seeks to provide his patients with the best surgical care and outcomes possible, and to prolong and improve their quality of life.
“I have assembled a leading team at this institution that I feel is second to none,” Dr. Berri said. “All of these members work together and are completely dedicated to ensuring the best possible quality of care and successful outcomes.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Berri has been recognized for his leadership, his attention to clinical care and surgical excellence, and his compassion with patients, staff, the hospital as a whole, and the community.

“It has been a privilege to help treat their disease, improve the quality of their life and prolong their survival,” he said.
